Eight corners, one atom

Teaching this? Open projector mode

A cubic unit cell repeats by translation to build a lattice. A corner belongs to eight cells, so each of its spheres contributes ⅛ of an atom. Eight corners give one atom per simple cubic cell. Whole spheres are drawn for visibility; only the fractions inside the cell count.
