The twelve notes

The chromatic scale

Teaching this? Open projector mode

Count every key — white and black — from one C to the next and you get twelve before the pattern repeats. Play all twelve in a row and you have the chromatic scale: every half step, no gaps.

The twelve pitch classes form the palette of this equal-tempered keyboard. Many Western melodies and chords use this system, but other tunings and microtonal music use additional pitch distinctions.
