Same amount, different names

Equal fractions and comparing

Teaching this? Open projector mode

Colour half of a pizza, then cut every slice in two. Now 2 of 4 slices are coloured, but you did not add or take away any pizza. So 1/2 = 2/4. Cut again and it is 4/8.

Fractions that show the same amount are called equivalent fractions.

Comparing fractions of the same whole:
- Same bottom number: more parts is more. 3/5 is more than 2/5.
- Same top number: the smaller bottom number wins, because its parts are bigger. 1/3 is more than 1/4.
- Neither the same: colour both and look, or find equivalent fractions with the same bottom number.
