Trade ten for one

Regrouping

Teaching this? Open projector mode

Ten blocks of one kind are worth exactly one block of the next size:
- 10 units = 1 rod
- 10 rods = 1 flat
- 10 flats = 1 cube

So you can trade 10 small blocks for 1 bigger block, and the number stays the same. You can also trade the other way: break 1 rod into 10 units.
