How long is a day?

Daylight depends on where you stand

Teaching this? Open projector mode

A day is 24 hours, but daylight is not. On the same date, a place near the equator and a place near the pole get very different amounts of it.

Look at the pin's circle of latitude on the globe: the yellow part is in sunlight, the blue part in darkness. As Earth spins the pin runs round that circle, so the yellow fraction is the day length.
